Plasma Cutting Hints and Tips
* Always remember to consult the safety requirements and correct operational instructions in your Longevity Plasma Cutter owner’s manual.
Plasma Cutting Tips:
The section of the work piece your work clamp is connected to should be clean and paint free. Also, make sure your clamp is as close to the cutting area as possible.
All Longevity Plasma Cutters come with an air regulator and water separator built in. We recommend you begin using your Longevity Plasma Cutter at the factory recommended air pressure (psi). Please consult your Longevity Plasma Cutter owner’s manual as the psi can vary from 65 – 85.
When using your Longevity Plasma Cutter for standard cutting we recommend you maintain a distance of 1/8 in. (3.2mm) to help preserve the life of your torch tip. A shield or torch guide is a viable option for maintaining a consistent distance.
All Longevity Plasma Cutters using a Pilot Arc technology will spark when the trigger is pulled, regardless of the distance from the metal. We recommend you press the trigger of your Longevity Plasma Cutter with Pilot Arc technology within 1/8 in. (3.2 mm) and begin cutting to ensure the quality of your cut.
Guide the torch of your Longevity Plasma Cutter slowly across the metal after the arc ignites.
When using a Longevity Plasma Cutter with either High Frequency or Pilot Arc technology, the tempo of your cut depends on the sparks. If the sparks don’t go through the metal and begin to bounce side to side or in your face at the torch tip, then you are moving too fast. Slow down and enjoy your Longevity Plasma Cutting experience.
When you are finished using your Longevity Plasma Cutter it is a good idea to momentarily pause before releasing the trigger while you sever the work piece.
Longevity Plasma Cutters with either Pilot Arc or High Frequency technology are cooled with “postflow.” Compressed air will continue to flow for 2 -5 seconds after the trigger of your Longevity Plasma Cutter is released to cool the torch and torch tip. Your Longevity Plasma Cutter, regardless of High Frequency or Pilot Arc technology, will have a switch for 2.5S or 5.0S and some units have what is called auto flow. Auto flow will regulate the proper amount of air passing through your Longevity Plasma Cutter to be sure the torch and torch tip is properly cooled. Please consult the owner’s manual of your Longevity Plasma Cutter to determine the setting appropriate for you.
